Um novo busto do líder soviético Josef Stalin foi inaugurado em Volgogrado, antes da visita do presidente russo, Vladimir Putin, à cidade. No evento, o Putin usou a efeméride do 80º aniversário da vitória do Exército soviético sobre as Forças alemãs para reforçar uma nova ameaça ao Ocidente.
Contra esse cenário nostálgico e patético, os Pet Shop Boys escreveram uma demo caseira “Living In The Past”. A letra da música é cantada objetivamente sob o ponto de vista do Putin, que procurou reabilitar o ditador comunista Stalin como um líder que não apenas lutou contra os alemães durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, mas que também transformou a URSS em uma potência mundial.
O vídeo exibe imagens borradas em preto e branco do ato público de inauguração do busto do tirano sanguinário Stalin, ocorrido a poucos dias em Volgogrado. O ato aconteceu quando as autoridades do Kremlin voltaram a apresentar uma operação para "desnazificação da Ucrânia".
Circularam rumores de que, durante essa visita do Putin, seria tomada uma decisão de restaurar o nome da cidade de Stalingrado. A cidade de Stalingrado mudou de nome para Volgogrado em 1961, quando Nikita Kruschev resolveu expurgar definitivamente o nome do Stalin do território soviético.
